6 Pursuing a career in Nutrition Research, with Jessica Bayes

Nutrition Grad Guide Episode 6 Jessica Bayes.png

Meet Jess Bayes, a PHD student studying the impact that a Mediterranean diet has towards the treatment of depression. Rather than getting fed up with the lack of research and scientific evidence available to us, Jess decided to take it into her own hands and pursue a career in research.

In this insightful episode, Jess reveals the ups and downs of going down the research pathway. She talks about:

  • The steps and further studies necessary to become a researcher and how she got to where she is today.

  • Her current research project and an insight into what this involves.

  • How the Endeavour honours program was one of the hardest but most rewarding things she’s done, and why the research skills she gained make her a better practitioner.

  • How she juggles her PHD, running her own business and still having a life.

  • The benefits of seeing one on one clients while pursuing a career in research.

  • The importance of networking and having a great support network around you.

  • Why research isn’t boring and how to get through the bits that are.

  • Wearing all of the different hats that a career in research involves.

  • Why you can make a far bigger impact through research than you can dealing with people one on one.

  • The importance of having a strong ‘why’ and passion for what you’re doing.

  • Why you need a thick skin to be in the research space.

  • The reason you should consider going into research too!

This was such an interesting episode and it opened my eyes to the fun and exciting sides of research! I know you can gain so much value from this whether you’re in research, thinking about it, or even if you’ve never given it a thought.
